Remarkable thing during the last few months, is that we delivered a lot of planetary slewing gearboxes to customers in different industries. Most of them were assembled from parts in our stock in Venlo. But not one of them was equal to each other!

Both large and small, two, three or even four planetary stages, with integrated pinion or a spline shaft with separate pinion, we’ve seen them all in our workshop. Either the slewing drives were prepared for electric (brake)motor or completely delivered with hydraulic motor and valve, painted in a customer’s color, everything is possible, except for one thing: delivered yesterday.

Due to the fact that several certifying bodies have changed their rules for man riding winches, it’s sometimes compulsory to modify a winch which will be used as man riding winch. We were recently contacted by a customer who needed to upgrade a winch for man riding. The applicable certifying body requests a secondary brake directly on the drum and not on the same driveshaft as the main gearbox is acting.

Since the requested brake torque on the drum was quite high for an electro-magnetic spring brake, our customer decided to mount a small winch gearbox inside the drum, on the opposite side of the main gearbox, to reduce the torque for the electric brake. 

The project needed to be realized in very short time. Since we assemble Dinamic Oil winch gearboxes in our workshop in Venlo and our sister company Euro Hubner Benelux has electro-magnetic spring brakes in stock, both on base of Type Approval, we took this challenge together. With the help of the engineers of our customer and some local machining shops, we were able to build the gearbox with special input, customer intermediate flange and bush to directly connect the electric brake. In the workshop of Euro Hubner Benelux we added an anti-condensation heating due to the environmental conditions and a proximity switch to give a signal when the brake is lifted.

Even though it was Christmas period and the set needed to be blasted and painted in a 3 layers offshore coating, we managed to realize it in 3 weeks time. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Not long ago we have shipped a beautiful umbilical winch with a pulling load of 66kN which will be used on a leg encircling crane on a huge windmill installation vessel. Together with a local partner the complex winch, with very demanding details, was engineered,built and tested in The Netherlands.

The winch will be driven with a 4 stage, Dinamic Oil planetary winch gearbox which was assembled and tested in our workshop in Venlo. The gearbox is prepared to be used with oil cooling system and was supplied with PT100 sensor in the input to monitor the oil temperature. Between the gearbox input shaft and brake motor, a steel flexible coupling with a 3 layer offshore coating was installed to work in this cold and harsh environment.

With a holding force of 140kN on a pitch diameter of 1227mm, this winch had a total weight incl. brake motor of a bit less than 4.000kg and a length of more than 3,3 meters.

In the first part of 2023 we were awarded by one of Netherlands biggest producers of dredging vessels for 6 winch drives for side- and ladder winches. In June 2023 we showed you on LinkedIn these Dinamic Oil winch gearboxes size WD-4803, completely ready to be dispatched. In the same period when we were assembling and preparing these 6+2 units, we have been working on the engineering of bigger sizes. We are proud to be able to tell you we got a few new orders for the ‘bigger brothers’, size WD-16002. 

These bigger winch gearboxes with a dynamic peak torque of 160.000Nm have been engineered to customer wishes. Due to the fact that they are driven by big radial piston motors, a low ratio was requested and therefor these units end up as a two-stage planetary winch drive with big input flange and shaft. Like previous supply, the units are supplied with stainless steel breather plug and an oil-resistant coating on the rotating part since the winch drum will be filled with oil to increase the thermal capacity.
